Difficulty level : Advanced
iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Mousehole Harbour Cornwall paint by numbers scene
The canvas follows the village as it wraps around its quay: granite cottages with slate roofs stepping up the hill, grey stone harbour walls with sun on one face and shadow on the other, red and blue fishing boats resting on flat water. A green coastal slope closes the cove on one side and the open sea runs out to a clear horizon under a blue sky with soft white cloud. The level is intermediate. Medium areas cover the buildings and the water, while the fine work sits in the masts, the cottage windows and the boat outlines, so the sky gives you a long easy stretch before the harbour asks for a steadier hand. Blues, slate greys and sea green carry most of the picture, with ochre warming the stone. The design belongs to our English countryside paint by numbers collection, and the water and hulls also sit in our boats and seascape paint by numbers.
Tips for painting this design
Block in the sky first, top to bottom, with the wide brush so your hand can rest on dry paint later, then keep that brush for the open harbour water. Switch to the medium brush for the granite walls and slate roofs and follow the straight line of the quay; a lightly loaded brush gives a cleaner edge than a thin one. Save the fine brush for masts, rigging and cottage windows. Paint the buildings before the boats so the hulls stay crisp against the water. The 36 or 48 colour option gives you more than one grey and one blue, which is what separates stone from sea from sky. Expect around 12 to 30 hours, depending on the size.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 15x15 to 70x80 cm (12 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with or without a wooden frame to assemble. Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:Printed linen canvas with numbered outlines of the quay, the cottages and the boats.
Paint:Numbered acrylic pots, ready to use, including sky blue, granite grey, slate blue, sea green and boat red.
Brushes:Three brushes. Fine for masts and windows, medium for cottages and harbour walls, wide for sky and water.
Guide:A paper guide with the finished Mousehole scene and the colour map for each numbered area.
Optional:A wooden frame to assemble, which keeps the canvas flat and ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I pick for the harbour and cottages?
The 40x50 cm and 50x70 cm sizes give the cottages, quay and boats room to read. At 30x40 cm and below, the windows and masts turn into simple blocks of colour, which suits a quicker paint but loses some of the harbour detail.
Do I need 36 or 48 colours for the stone and the sea?
The 24 colour set covers the scene, though the greys are fewer. With 36 or 48 colours you get several slate greys and blues, so the harbour wall, the roofs, the water and the sky stay apart instead of blending into one tone.
How long does it take and how hard is it?
This is an intermediate design and takes around 12 to 30 hours, depending on the size you order. Larger canvases add more numbered areas in the sky and water rather than harder detail. The fine work stays in the masts, windows and boat edges.
Can I hang it straight after painting?
The canvas arrives rolled, or with a wooden frame to assemble if you choose that option. The square format takes a standard frame once the paint is dry, and the medium areas dry flat without ridges. We dispatch within 48 hours.
