iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
St Michael's Mount Sunset Paint by Numbers
The sunset does most of the work. A wide band of golden orange sky sits above deep blue water, and the last warm light catches the stone walls of the castle and the trees on the island. A cobblestone causeway curves from the foreground out to the mount, with orange and blue reflections spreading across the water on both sides. A small coastal village and a few sailboats rest in the harbour behind, and rocky shoreline frames the bottom of the picture. The finish is impressionist, with soft edges and blocks of colour, so the sky and sea blend the way they do at dusk.
Most of the canvas is open sky, open water and broad reflections, which keeps the wide brush busy. The small areas sit in clusters: castle windows, sailboat masts and the stones of the causeway. That mix sets the kit at intermediate level. You get a printed linen canvas with numbered outlines, numbered acrylic paints that are ready to use, three brushes and a paper guide with the colour chart.
It belongs to our English countryside paint by numbers collection, alongside cottage, lake and lavender field scenes. If you want the same low light without the castle, browse the sunset paint by numbers designs.
Tips for painting this design
Block in the sky first, laying the golden orange in horizontal strokes with the wide brush and keeping the colour even where the light fades. Then move down into the deep blue water and follow the direction of the reflections rather than crossing them. The medium brush handles the trees, the village buildings and the rocks along the shore. Keep the fine brush for the castle windows, the boat masts and the edges of the causeway stones, and let one colour dry before you paint the area beside it. A 36 or 48 colour set gives you more than one orange and more than one blue, which separates the sunset from its reflections instead of leaving two flat bands. Work at a steady pace and expect around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you choose.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:A printed linen canvas with numbered outlines of the mount, the causeway and the sunset sea.
Paint:Numbered acrylic pots, ready to use, covering golden orange, deep blue, terracotta red, olive green and warm beige.
Brushes:Wide for the open sky and water, medium for the trees and village, fine for the castle windows and boat masts.
Guide:A paper guide showing the finished picture and the colour chart for every numbered area.
Optional:Add the wooden frame to assemble if you want the finished sunset ready to hang. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.

Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size shows the castle and causeway clearly?
The 40x50 cm canvas gives the mount room for the windows and the causeway stones while keeping the sky and reflections manageable. Go smaller with 30x40 cm or 40x40 cm for a quicker project, or larger with 60x80 cm and 60x80 cm so the sunset bands and the water reflections stretch out.
Are 24 colours enough for this sunset?
24 colours cover the scene, but the sky and the reflections need more than one orange and more than one blue. The 36 and 48 colour options give you those extra shades, so the light fading above the castle and the reflections below it blend instead of sitting in flat bands.
How long does the painting take, and is it hard?
Plan around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size, spread over several evenings. The level is intermediate: the sky and open sea move quickly with the wide brush, while the castle windows, boat masts and causeway stones need the fine brush and a little patience.
Who would this kit suit as a gift?
Anyone who knows Cornwall will recognise the causeway and the harbour village. It also makes a good gift for someone who visits the county, since the canvas, numbered paints, three brushes and paper guide all arrive together, and the wooden frame option means the finished scene can go straight on a wall.
