iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Thatched Cottage with Hanging Baskets Paint by Numbers
A stone path leads to a timber-framed cottage with a deep straw roof, hanging flower baskets either side of the door and hollyhocks along the front wall. Wooden benches lean against the stonework, and green hills roll towards a distant village under a summer evening sky that warms to gold at the horizon. The style is impressionist, with soft brushwork in the thatch and the flower heads. The level is intermediate: most of the canvas is medium areas, and the fine detail sits in the baskets, the hollyhocks and the timber beams. We print the outlines and numbers on linen canvas and send numbered acrylic pots, three brushes and a paper guide. You will find more villages and lanes in our English countryside paint by numbers collection, and open views in our landscape paint by numbers range.
Tips for painting this design
Paint the sky first, working down from the top with the wide brush so the blue stays even and the pale band near the horizon keeps its glow. Do the hills next with the medium brush, leaving the sage green light where they meet the sky. Follow the fall of the straw on the roof rather than filling it flat, and blend warm yellow into terracotta along the ridge. Save the hanging baskets and hollyhocks for last: they hold the finest detail, so take one flower head at a time with the fine brush. Keep the stone path pale and low in contrast so the cottage stays the focus. A 36 or 48 colour set gives you more greens and pinks for the garden.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:a printed linen canvas with numbered outlines of the cottage, the hanging baskets, the path and the hills behind.
Paint:24, 36 or 48 numbered acrylic pots depending on the option, ready to use, covering warm yellow, terracotta, sage green, sky blue and soft pink.
Brushes:three, fine for the flowers and timber beams, medium for the thatch and stone walls, wide for the sky and hills.
Guide:a paper guide with the finished picture and the colour chart for each numbered area.
Optional:a wooden frame to assemble, so the finished cottage scene goes straight on the wall. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
What size should I pick for the cottage and its baskets?
The 40x50 cm canvas leaves clear room for the hanging baskets and the timber beams. Sizes run from 20x30 to 60x80 cm across 12 options: small sizes suit a quick project, and the largest make the flowers and the distant village easier to paint.
How long does this one take, and is it hard?
Expect around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you choose. The level is intermediate: the roof, walls and sky are medium areas, and the baskets, hollyhocks and beams need the fine brush. Nothing needs mixing, since the pots are numbered and ready to use.
Do I need the 48 colour set for the flowers?
The 24 colour set covers the whole canvas. The 36 and 48 sets give you more greens, pinks and yellows, which helps in the garden border and the hanging baskets where the shades sit close together.
Can I hang it as soon as it is finished?
Choose the framed option if you want to hang it straight away: the wooden stretcher bars assemble around the canvas. The unframed option arrives rolled, so you can decide on a frame once the paint is dry.
