Fantasy paint by numbers kits for adults

Fantasy paint by numbers kits for adults put storybook settings on your wall: mushroom houses, glowing forest paths, beaches sparkling under the moon, multicoloured trees of life and luminous waterfalls. The range also includes blue and pink butterflies on glowing flowers, a Pegasus and a few portraits, such as the cosmic goddess and the blue haired elf. Most designs use a dark night background with bright accents, so you work from large calm areas towards small points of light. If you are new to the hobby, start with a subject that has wide areas, such as a moonlit beach or a starry sky. Designs full of fine detail, like mushroom houses or crystals, ask for more patience. For those, pick 40x50 cm or larger so the small elements stay easy to read.

Painting this theme: three things to get right

Sky and moon first

Begin with the sky and the moon, which cover the largest areas. Use the wide brush for the background, then the medium brush to blend the gradients. Keep the stars and reflections for the end and apply them with the fine brush. When a light shade has to cover a number, two thin coats work better than one thick one.

Mushroom houses and details

Paint the walls and the ground around the mushroom houses first. Leave the yellow windows, the flowers and the small glowing dots until last. These areas are small, so use the fine brush and work in short touches. Two light coats are enough to hide a number under a pale colour.

Beaches and moonlit reflections

Do the sea and the sand first with the medium brush. Add the pebbles and the silver reflections afterwards with the fine brush. Glowing waves need even strokes in one direction. Save the wide brush for the night sky, and go over any number that still shows through a light shade with a second thin coat.

Choosing between scenes

Landscapes make up most of the range. The pebble beaches and moonlit seas suit a calm, steady rhythm, because the sky and water are made of broad areas that blend into each other. The trees of life, in pink, luminous or multicoloured versions, mix large backgrounds with intricate branches, so they sit in the middle of the difficulty scale. Mushroom houses and crystal paths contain the most small areas and reward a slower pace. If you like painting nature in a more realistic style, our nature paint by numbers collection is a good next stop, and the tree of life paint by numbers page lists every version of that motif.

Picking a size

Sizes run from 15x15 to 70x80 cm. A small canvas gives a quick project, but the areas are tight, so a scene with many glowing dots can feel fiddly. Larger formats spread the same design over more space and make each number easier to read. For a mushroom house, a crystal forest or a waterfall canyon, we suggest 40x50 cm or above. For a single butterfly or a moon over the sea, a smaller size works well. If you want a ready-made gift, framed paint by numbers removes the need to organise a frame afterwards.

Working with dark backgrounds

Many of these designs have deep blue, purple or near black skies. Paint these areas in an even, unhurried way and let each coat dry before you place a lighter colour next to it. Dark paint can show through pale shades, so apply light colours in thin layers and build them up. Clean your brush each time you change shade, particularly between a dark blue and a pale pink or white. Work from the top of the canvas down if you are right handed, and rest your wrist on a clean sheet of paper to avoid smudging finished areas.

What each kit contains

Linen canvasLinen canvas printed with the outlines and numbers of the fantasy areas.
Acrylic paintNumbered pots of acrylic paint, 24, 36 or 48 colours depending on the option.
3 brushesThree brushes: a fine one for details, a medium one and a wide one.
Paper chartA paper chart of the design to check the numbers of the areas.
Wooden frame optionalA wooden frame is optional; without it the canvas arrives rolled in a tube.

Butterflies, portraits and other motifs

Beyond landscapes, the category holds a series of glowing butterflies on pink, white and yellow flowers, as well as a Pegasus and portraits of a woman with starry hair and a blue haired elf. Butterfly designs have clear shapes and make a friendly first project. If butterflies are your main interest, browse our butterfly paint by numbers range for more choice. Portraits ask for careful work on faces, so use the fine brush and keep the paper chart beside you to check each number.

Looking after your finished painting

Let the painting dry fully before you move it. Canvases that arrive rolled in a tube should be laid flat for a while so the linen relaxes, and you can paint them in that position. Once finished, hang the canvas away from damp and direct heat. A framed version goes straight on the wall, while an unframed canvas can be stretched on a frame of your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should I choose for a detailed fantasy scene?

For scenes with many small elements, such as mushroom houses or crystals, choose 40x50 cm or larger. The extra space keeps neighbouring areas easy to tell apart. A 30x40 cm canvas is still manageable for a first attempt at a fantasy paint by numbers kit.

How do I paint the glowing areas without mixing colours?

Paint the glowing areas last, using the fine brush, and clean it between each light shade. Let the surrounding dark colours dry first. If a pale colour must cover a number, apply two thin coats instead of one thick coat.

Does the kit include a frame and brushes?

Each kit includes three brushes: a fine one, a medium one and a wide one. The wooden frame is optional. Without it, the canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You can also order the frame separately if you decide later.

Can I give a fantasy kit to a beginner?

Yes. Choose a design with large areas, such as a moonlit beach or a starry sky. The instructions and the paper chart help a newcomer follow the numbers, so these kits make a good gift for someone starting paint by numbers.
