Paint by numbers accessories: choosing the right one for your kit

Each accessory answers a specific problem that comes up while you paint. Before buying one, look at what your kit already holds: the canvas, the numbered acrylic paint pots and three brushes are enough to complete a whole design. Accessories help when you want to see the numbers more clearly, sit with a straighter back, fill very fine areas, replace a colour that has run out or mount the finished canvas on a wooden frame. The guide below sets out which problem each one solves, so you only add what you will use.

Frames and easels for display and comfort

A wooden canvas frame turns a rolled canvas into a piece ready to hang. The stretcher bars slot together without glue or nails, and the tacks and hooks come with the frame. Choose the size that matches your canvas exactly, because a frame that is too small will not stretch the linen evenly. If you prefer to buy the frame with the design, our framed paint by numbers range offers that option.

The table easel works on a different problem: posture. Painting flat on a table for an hour or two bends the neck and shoulders. Raising the canvas to an angle brings the surface closer to eye level and makes the numbers easier to read, which also means fewer mistakes at the edges of small areas.

Brushes and magnifier for fine detail

The set of 11 fine brushes runs from size 00000 to size 7 and has nylon bristles. The smallest sizes handle outlines, eyes and tiny highlights. The middle sizes fill small areas, and the largest cover backgrounds in fewer strokes. Pair them with the LED magnifier if the fine numbers strain your eyes. People who paint long evening sessions often find the two together make the biggest difference to comfort.

These tools suit detailed canvases particularly well. If you are choosing between designs, our easy paint by numbers page lists pictures with larger areas, which need fewer fine brushes.

Refill paint pots

Acrylic paint pots dry out or run low when a large background area uses more than expected. The refill pots follow the numbers from your canvas, in the shades of your kit, so the new paint blends into what you have already applied. Give us the title of the canvas and the pot numbers when you order. Keep lids closed firmly between sessions to slow drying.

Which accessory first?

Start with the problem you notice most. Eye strain points to the magnifier, a sore back to the easel, and a bare canvas to the frame.
