iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Wooden boardwalk to the beach paint by numbers: a seaside path through the dunes
A wooden boardwalk crosses grassy dunes and ends at a beach edged by the ocean. The planks run through the centre of the picture, with a handrail along one side. Beige sand and clumps of yellow-green grass fill the space on either side. Further back, turquoise water breaks into white waves under a clear blue sky. The shadows cast by the wood give the scene its depth and pull your eye towards the sea. Blue, turquoise, beige and white dominate, and the detail sits at a medium level, so the kit suits you if you have already painted a few canvases.
Tips for painting this design
Start with the blue sky at the top of the canvas, which gives you a clean background to work down from. Next, paint the turquoise ocean and the white waves along the horizon. Do the beige dunes before the boardwalk, so the planks sit on top of finished sand. The shadows on the planks need the fine brush to follow their narrow outlines. The yellow-green grass works best with short, quick brushstrokes. Choose 40x40 cm or larger to keep the slats and the handrail easy to read. Allow around 12 to 30 hours in total, depending on the size you pick.
The sea and sand tones also appear in our seascape paint by numbers collection. For more shoreline scenes, see the beach and sea paint by numbers kits.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 15x15 to 70x80 cm (12 sizes). You choose a kit with 24, 36 or 48 colours, on rolled canvas, with or without a wooden frame to assemble. Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What is in the kit
Canvas:The linen canvas arrives with the outlines and numbers already printed for the boardwalk, dunes and ocean.
Paint:The numbered acrylic pots are ready to use and cover the blues, turquoise, beige, yellow-green and white of the scene. You choose 24, 36 or 48 colours.
Brushes:Three brushes: the fine one for the handrail and grass, the medium for the waves, the wide for the sky and sand.
Guide:The printed paper guide lets you check the numbers on the boardwalk and dune areas as you go.
Optional:You can add a wooden frame to assemble, which stretches the canvas of this coastal view.

Without frame
The canvas comes rolled in a tube. You paint it flat on a table and can have it framed once it is dry.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars slot together to hold the canvas taut. You paint on a firm surface, then hang the finished picture straight on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for the wooden boardwalk design?
Sizes run from 15x15 to 70x80 cm. We suggest 40x40 cm or larger, so the planks and handrail stay clear. A 50x50 cm canvas gives you more room for the clumps of grass on the dunes.
Are the boardwalk and handrail details difficult to paint?
The level of detail is medium. The finest areas are the shadows on the planks and the blades of grass. The fine brush supplied in the kit covers both, and the sky, sea and sand are larger areas that go quickly.
How long does this wooden boardwalk kit take to finish?
Plan on roughly 12 to 30 hours, depending on the size you order. A small canvas can be done over a few evenings. A large one is easier to split into sessions: sky first, then sea, dunes and boardwalk.
Should I order the canvas with or without a frame?
Without a frame, the canvas arrives rolled and you paint it flat. With the wooden frame to assemble, the canvas is stretched on stretcher bars, so you paint on a taut surface and can hang the picture when it is finished.
