iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Owl family paint by number kit: three owls under the northern lights
An adult long-eared owl with brown and beige speckled feathers sits in a nest of tangled twigs and watches over two juveniles covered in pale down. Pine branches and pine cones frame the group. Behind them, emerald green and violet northern lights cross a midnight blue sky scattered with white stars. The level is intermediate: the sky and the lights are medium to large areas, while the speckles and the down need patience. Count on around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you choose. If you enjoy this subject, our owl paint by numbers range has more designs, and our bird designs cover other species. The dark blue sky works well in a bedroom or a quiet reading corner, and the design makes a gift for anyone who likes owls or wildlife.
Tips for painting this design
Begin with the midnight blue sky using the wide brush, so the background is down before you reach the feathers. Add the emerald green and violet bands next. The pale down of the juveniles calls for the fine brush, because the small beige patches sit close to the outlines. On a 20x30 cm canvas these patches are tight. From 40x40 cm upwards the brown and beige of the adult's plumage are easier to keep apart. Leave the pine needles, the brown pine cones and the white stars for last. The kit comes with 24, 36 or 48 colours depending on the option you select.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:The linen canvas is printed with the outlines and numbers of the adult owl, the two juveniles, the nest, the branches, the pine cones and the sky with its northern lights.
Paint:The numbered acrylic pots are ready to use and include the emerald green, violet, midnight blue, brown, beige and white needed for the sky, the feathers and the nest.
Brushes:Use the fine brush for the pine needles and stars, the medium brush for the speckled feathers and the wide brush for the night sky and the northern lights.
Guide:The paper sheet lets you check the numbers of the adult, the juveniles and the northern lights before you start painting.
Optional:The wooden frame to assemble stretches the canvas, so you can paint the nest, the branches and the starry sky on a flat surface. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size shows the details of the owls' plumage best?
Choose 40x40 cm or larger. At this size the brown and beige speckles of the adult and the pale down of the two juveniles cover areas big enough to paint without crossing the outlines. On 20x30 cm the same patches are very small and need the fine brush throughout.
Are the northern lights difficult to paint?
No. The green and violet bands are large areas, so the wide brush does most of the work. Keep the fine brush for the white stars scattered across the sky. The intermediate level comes from the small beige patches on the juveniles, not from the sky.
How long does this kit take to finish?
Allow around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you choose, with the largest canvases taking the longest. Splitting the work into the sky, the owls and the pine branches gives you natural places to stop and come back later.
Does the kit come with a frame?
The canvas is supplied rolled without a frame, or with a wooden frame to assemble if you select that option. Either way the kit includes the numbered acrylic paints, three brushes (fine, medium and wide) and a paper reference sheet. Dispatch is within 48 hours.
