Difficulty level : Advanced
iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Tom and Jerry in a flying saucer paint by numbers
Tom sits at the controls of a round saucer with Jerry beside him, an orange flame trailing from the back of the ship. White stars, round planets and thin constellation lines fill the sky behind them. Dark purple, midnight blue and deep black take up most of the canvas, so the grey of the cat and the brown of the mouse carry the picture. The square sizes hold the saucer centred, and 40x40 cm keeps the small stars and Jerry's face at a comfortable scale for the fine brush.
Tips for painting this design
Block in the black and midnight blue fields at the top and bottom first, so the edges of the sky are settled before you touch anything else. Work round the purple nebula from the outside in, then paint the hull of the saucer. Leave Tom, Jerry, the flame and the constellation lines until last and switch to the fine brush, because those are the smallest areas on the canvas. Rinse the brush between the black and the orange so the flame stays clean. The level is intermediate: most areas are medium sized and the tight work sits around the two characters.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a kit of 24, 36 or 48 colours, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:printed linen canvas with Tom, Jerry, the saucer and the purple nebula marked out in numbered areas.
Paint:numbered acrylic pots, ready to use, holding the purple, black, grey, midnight blue and orange of the scene.
Brushes:three brushes. The fine one for the constellation lines and Jerry's features, the medium for Tom, the wide one for the black background.
Guide:a printed paper guide to check which number belongs to which area of the sky, the ship and the two characters.
Optional:wooden frame bars to assemble, so the linen is stretched flat before you paint the first area. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.
If you want a shorter first project, our paint by numbers for kids & beginners collection has simpler designs, and the Heroes & Licences range holds more cartoon characters to paint.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for this square design?
Every size holds the full composition. At 40x40 cm the small stars and the faces of Tom and Jerry stay big enough to paint with the fine brush, while 50x50 or 60x80 cm give more room across the background.
How many paint pots come with the kit?
You get 24, 36 or 48 numbered acrylic pots depending on the option you choose. The palette covers the dark purple, midnight blue, black and grey of the sky and the characters, plus the orange of the flame. More pots break the background and the hull into finer tones.
How long does it take to paint?
Around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size. Most of the sky and the nebula are medium areas you can fill without stopping, and the last stretch goes on Tom, Jerry and the thin constellation lines. It is an intermediate level project.
Should I choose the framed or the unframed canvas?
The rolled canvas without a frame is easy to lay flat while you paint. The wooden frame arrives as bars you assemble yourself, and it holds the linen tight so the numbered areas stay flat under the brush. Both options use the same printed canvas.
Which colour should I start with in paint by numbers?
Start with the flat background areas in black and midnight blue to mark out the starry zone, then paint the purple body of the nebula and the metal hull of the saucer. Keep Tom, Jerry, the flame and the constellation lines for the end, with the fine brush. The paper guide gives the numbers, not the order of painting.
