Difficulty level : Advanced
iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Sloth at the Foot of a Tree Paint by Numbers: the scene on the canvas
A sloth lies on its side at the foot of a trunk, one paw resting on the grass, its head turned to the left. The fur runs from light grey at the muzzle to brown along the back, against the green leaves. The trunk rises on the right, carrying branches loaded with green leaves. Below, the ground is a carpet of grass dotted with small blue flowers, and the background breaks into yellow, blue and white patches in an impressionist style. The landscape format keeps the clearing and the trees in one wide view.
Tips for painting this design
Paint the trunk and branches first. The browns and dark greens cover the widest areas and give you the structure of the picture before you touch the animal. Then take the fur from the muzzle towards the back, following the numbers from light grey to brown. Keep the small blue flowers and the yellow background patches for the last session, with the fine brush. The level is intermediate: a 30x40 cm leaves a beginner enough room, a 40x50 cm separates the leaves more clearly, and a 20x30 cm makes the muzzle tight. The 24 colour option repeats a few greens across the foliage; 36 or 48 colours give the fur and the grass more shades to work with. Count around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size, and the rest of our paint by numbers for kids & beginners range uses the same numbering.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a kit with 24, 36 or 48 colours, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:The linen canvas is printed with the outlines and numbers of the lying sloth, the trunk, the branches and the grass carpet.
Paint:The numbered acrylic pots are ready to use and hold the greens, blues, yellows, browns and whites for the foliage, the fur and the background.
Brushes:The fine brush takes the small blue flowers and the edge of the fur, the medium one the trunk and the paws, the wide one the background patches.
Guide:The paper guide to the design shows which number goes with the sloth, the branches and the grass.
Optional:The wooden frame to assemble stretches the printed canvas flat so the paint dries without the linen curling. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.
We dispatch within 48 hours, and the canvas arrives rolled or mounted on the wooden frame.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the finished picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for this sloth?
The 30x40 cm suits a first canvas, with areas wide enough for a beginner. The 40x50 cm gives the foliage and the blue flowers more space. On the 20x30 cm the muzzle and the paws get tight, so keep that size for someone who has painted before.
Is the fur difficult to paint?
No blending is involved: each patch of fur carries its own number, from light grey to brown. The areas around the muzzle and the paws are the smallest on the canvas. Use the fine brush there and on the blue flowers, and load it lightly so the paint stays inside the outlines.
Who is this paint by numbers kit good for?
For animal lovers working at intermediate level, and for children painting with an adult nearby. The landscape layout, the green foliage and the patches of yellow and blue keep the picture readable at every stage. The kit holds the printed canvas, the numbered pots and three brushes.
Is paint by numbers difficult?
The level of detail is medium. Paint the trunk and the branches in brown and dark green first, then the fur from the muzzle towards the back, saving the blue flowers and the yellow patches for the end with the fine brush. Allow around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size, and check the numbers under daylight for the greys.
