Difficulty level : Advanced
iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Two Macaws on a Branch Paint by Numbers
One scarlet macaw sits on the left, its red feathers cut by dark blue flight feathers. On the right, a blue and yellow macaw shows a golden chest against an azure back. Their hooked beaks almost meet above the centre of the canvas. Dense tropical foliage fills the background in deep greens with a few touches of orange, and the brown branch crosses the lower part so the claws have something to grip. The landscape format gives both birds room. The finish is oil-painting style, built from bold blocks of colour. For garden species on branches, our bird paint by numbers range covers smaller birds too.
Tips for painting this design
Start with the red macaw: its scarlet areas are large and fill quickly. Leave the tail and wing feathers until the end, when the fine brush can reach the narrow sections. On the blue and yellow macaw, paint the golden chest before the azure back, as the boundary between the two is a sharp line. The foliage is the slow part, with many small green shapes: work through it in blocks from top to bottom. Pick 40x50 cm or larger for comfort on the beaks and claws. If you would rather paint fur than feathers, our animal paint by numbers section has cats, dogs and horses.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a kit with 24, 36 or 48 colours, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:The printed linen canvas carries the outlines of both macaws, the branch and the tropical foliage.
Paint:Numbered pots of ready-to-use acrylic hold the red, blue, yellow, green and orange shades for the feathers and beaks. Options come with 24, 36 or 48 colours.
Brushes:Three brushes, fine, medium and wide. The fine one handles the hooked beaks, claws and tail feathers.
Guide:A paper guide to the design, to check the numbers for the macaws, the branch and the foliage.
Optional:The wooden frame to assemble stretches the printed canvas of the two macaws. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the finished picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for these macaws?
40x50 cm is the practical minimum: the feather and beak sections sit close together and need room. Move up to 60x80 cm if you want the foliage to feel open. 30x40 cm still works when you prefer broad blocks of colour over fine detail.
Is this design difficult to paint?
The level is intermediate. Both bodies fill in large areas and go fast. The difficulty sits in the tropical foliage and the tail feathers, where the numbers are small. Allow 12 to 30 hours depending on the size.
Who is this macaw paint by numbers kit a good gift for?
For a parrot lover, or for someone who wants strong colour on a wall. The scarlet macaw against the blue and yellow one reads clearly from the first painted areas, so the canvas looks good early on. The kit holds the printed linen canvas, numbered paint pots and three brushes.
Is paint by numbers difficult?
Expect 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you order. Paint the red macaw first, then the golden chest of the blue and yellow bird. Save the tail and wing feathers for the last sitting, with the fine brush.
What are the standard sizes for a painting?
Twelve sizes run from 20x30 to 60x80 cm, with 24, 36 or 48 colours depending on the option. For the beaks and claws, choose 40x50 cm or bigger. The canvas arrives rolled, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled).
Where can I hang the finished painting?
The landscape format sits well above a sofa, a sideboard or a desk, and the red and blue lift a plain wall. Take the wooden frame option if you want the canvas stretched: the bars assemble at home and hold the linen taut before it goes up.
