- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.

Alpine Hairpin Road Paint by Numbers Kit: Winding Road and Slate Grey Peaks
This alpine hairpin road paint by numbers kit shows a pale paved road switchbacking up a green alpine slope. Five or six hairpin bends stack above one another, each edged with grass and low shrubs, so the road leads the eye from the foreground up to the summits. Behind the road, slate grey peaks rise into a partly cloudy sky, with soft white clouds gathered around the tops. Dark conifer forest covers the lower slopes on both sides of the valley, and small patches of golden ochre and white wildflowers dot the foreground grass.
The style is impressionist, with loose blocks of colour and no sharp photographic edges. Most areas are medium sized, with fine details limited to the road edges and the flowers. The level is intermediate, and the finished picture takes around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you choose. If you enjoy high ground, our mountain paint by numbers collection has more scenes to paint.
Tips for painting this design
Start with the sky. Lay the blue in smooth horizontal strokes and leave the cloud areas until the blue has dried. The kit includes three brushes: use the medium one for the broad green slopes and the wide one for the sky and foreground grass. The fine brush is for the road edges, the hairpin curves and the wildflower dots.
Paint the conifer forest in two passes, a dark forest green base first, then lighter green dabs on top for the tree tops. The slate grey peaks look best with the 36 or 48 colour option, which gives you several greys and blues to suggest distance. Work from the top of the canvas downwards so your hand never rests on wet paint. Sizes run from 20x30 to 60x80 cm, and the larger ones give the hairpin bends more room. Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.

Questions about this design
What canvas size suits this winding road scene?
A medium size such as 40x50 cm gives the hairpin bends and forest enough room to stay clear. Larger sizes make the road edges and wildflowers easier to paint, while 20x30 cm works as a small practice piece. Sizes run from 20x30 to 60x80 cm.
The hairpin bends look fiddly. Any advice?
Paint the road as one pale shape first with the medium brush, then tidy the edges with the fine brush once the paint is dry. Leave the grass and forest until last, so any small slips are easy to cover.
How long does this kit take to paint?
Allow around 12 to 30 hours, depending on the size. A 20x30 cm canvas sits at the short end and a 60x80 cm canvas at the long end. Short sessions work well here, as you can finish one area such as the sky before stopping.
Is this kit suitable for a first-time painter?
It is rated intermediate. Most areas are medium sized, with fine details limited to the road edges and wildflowers. A beginner can manage it by choosing a larger size and working slowly. It also makes a fitting gift for anyone who loves hillwalking or alpine holidays.
