Difficulty level : Intermediate
iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Red torii and Japanese cherry blossom paint by numbers
A vermilion torii stands in calm blue water, its reflection breaking on the surface. Pink cherry blossom branches frame the gate, a cloudy sky fills the top and a black plaque sits at the centre. Most of the canvas is medium areas of sky, water and blossom; the fine work falls on the petals and the reflected pillars, which puts this design at intermediate level. The original layout is square, and the design comes in 12 sizes from 15x15 cm to 70x80 cm.
Tips for painting this design
Block in the sky and its white clouds first, then the blue water. Leave the red reflection until the water is dry so the pillar edges stay sharp. The fine brush separates the blossom petals from the branches, and from 40x40 cm upwards those numbered shapes stay wide enough to follow. Two thin coats on the black plaque keep it flat with no brush marks. The 36 colour option adds blues for the water gradient.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 15x15 to 70x80 cm (12 sizes). You choose a kit of 24, 36 or 48 colours, on rolled canvas, with or without a wooden frame to assemble. Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:The printed linen canvas outlines the torii, the blossom branches and the reflected pillars, with a number in each area.
Paint:The numbered acrylic pots are ready to use and cover the gate, the petals, the water and the plaque.
Brushes:Three brushes: the wide one for sky and water, the fine one for petals and the plaque edges.
Guide:The paper guide shows the colour behind each number for the gate, blossoms and water.
Optional:Add the wooden frame to assemble if you want the canvas stretched; without it the kit ships rolled. We dispatch within 48 hours.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for the torii and cherry blossom?
The original layout is square, so 40x40 cm keeps the composition as drawn. Larger sizes give the petals and the reflected pillars more room for the fine brush. The smallest canvases compress those areas.
How many colours come with the kit?
You choose 24, 36 or 48 numbered acrylic pots. The 24 colours cover the red gate, the pink blossom, the water and the black plaque. Take 36 or 48 if you want more shades for the sky and the water surface.
Is this kit suitable for a beginner?
We class it as intermediate. The sky, water and blossom blocks are straightforward, while the petals and reflected pillars need a steadier hand. Expect around 12 to 30 hours depending on the size you pick.
