iWhat does this level mean?
- Beginner: one large subject and big areas to paint, little detail. Ideal for a first canvas.
- Intermediate: several elements or colour gradients, with smaller areas. It takes a little more care and a fine brush in places.
- Advanced: a busy scene with many small areas and small faces to paint with a fine brush. For experienced painters, or with patience.
Tip: on a larger canvas the areas are bigger and easier to paint.
Dora and Boots by the Parrot Waterfall paint by numbers kit
Dora stands with her purple backpack and red boots, Boots the monkey beside her on bare earth. Behind them a river runs towards a waterfall among tropical foliage, and macaws with red, blue and yellow feathers perch on the branches. Greens of leaves, blues of the water and pinks of flowers cover most of the canvas, so your first sessions land on wide, forgiving shapes.
The design belongs to our Dora the Explorer paint by numbers collection, next to the pirate ship and turtle scenes. The canvas is cut square, which matches the symmetry of a waterfall framed by foliage on both sides.
Tips for painting this design
Block in the blue of the waterfall and the river first, then the broad green leaves. Leave Dora, Boots and the macaws until the background has dried, so your hand can rest on the canvas. The fine brush handles the macaw beaks, the wing lines and the two faces; the medium brush covers the clothing and the wide brush fills the falling water. Rinse the fine brush between red, blue and yellow so the feather tones stay clean. Pick a 40x40 cm size or larger if you want the eyes and the backpack straps comfortable to paint, and check dark greens against the paper chart before you load the brush.
Sizes, colours and painting time
The design comes in 20x30 to 60x80 cm (9 sizes). You choose a 24, 36 or 48 colour kit, on rolled canvas, with a wooden frame to assemble or with the canvas already mounted on its frame (except in 50x70 and 60x80 cm, delivered rolled). Allow around 12 to 30 h depending on the size.
What's in the kit
Canvas:Linen, with the outlines and numbers printed for Dora, Boots, the falling water and the macaws.
Paint:Numbered acrylic pots, ready to use, covering the greens of the foliage, the blues of the river, the pinks of the flowers and the reds and yellows of the birds.
Brushes:Three, fine, medium and wide. Fine for the macaw heads and eyes, medium for Dora and Boots, wide for the waterfall.
Guide:A paper chart of the design to cross-check numbers on the red boots, the purple backpack and the shadowed leaves.
Optional:The canvas arrives rolled, or with a wooden frame to assemble so you can stretch the jungle scene before you start. You can also choose it already mounted on its frame, ready to hang.

Without frame
The canvas arrives rolled in a tube. You paint it flat and frame it afterwards if you wish.
With frame
Wooden stretcher bars to assemble stretch the canvas. You paint on a taut surface and hang the finished picture on the wall.
Mounted canvas
The canvas arrives already stretched on its wooden frame. You start painting right away and hang the picture on the wall.
Questions about this design
Which size should I choose for this design?
A 40x40 cm canvas or larger keeps Dora's face and Boots's features easy to read and leaves room for the macaw heads. On the smaller sizes the numbered shapes tighten and the eyes need the fine brush and a steady hand. For a wall piece, go bigger than 40x50 cm.
Are the parrot details difficult to paint?
The macaws sit in medium sized shapes, with thin lines for the wing feathers and beaks. Use the fine brush and keep the paint thin enough to flow. Paint one colour on each bird, let it dry, then add the tone beside it so the red, blue and yellow stay apart.
Who is this kit a good gift for?
It suits a child of eight or over who knows the cartoon, and any adult new to painting. The background shapes are medium sized and forgiving, so confidence builds before you reach the faces. It also works as a gift for a Dora fan.
