Christmas Gift Ideas for Grandparents | Paint by Numbers

What is a good Christmas gift for grandparents who have everything?

Rather than adding to a collection of unused objects, a custom kit provides both a relaxing activity and a meaningful keepsake. The numbered canvas, acrylic paints and brushes give them everything needed to begin, with a clear creative task that can fit into a quiet afternoon.

A kit can become meaningful through the time spent painting it. A grandparent may enjoy working on it alone, or share a few sections with a grandchild during a visit. Choosing a scene linked to a favourite place, pet or family interest makes the activity feel considered. Our paint by numbers kits for adults come in different canvas sizes, so you can choose an option that suits the available time and space.

Once finished, the canvas becomes a visible reminder of the person who gave it and the hours spent creating it. For a more personal present, a family photograph can be turned into a custom paint by numbers kit, giving grandparents a keepsake connected to a shared memory.

Why a paint by numbers kit makes a thoughtful gift for a grandparent

A paint by numbers kit gives a grandparent a calm, hands-on activity with a finished picture to keep, display or share with the family.

• Filling each numbered section creates a quiet routine that can help them slow down and focus on the task in front of them.
• No previous painting experience is needed, since the pre-printed canvas shows where each colour belongs.
• Each kit includes the canvas, numbered acrylic paints and brushes, so there is no need to assemble a separate set of materials.
• Gradually completing the image gives a clear sense of progress and a satisfying result at the end.
• The finished canvas can become a decorative piece for their home, or a keepsake that grandchildren can help them create.
• An optional frame makes the completed work easier to display and gives the gift a neat finishing touch.

Choosing a design that suits your grandparents

Pick a subject that reflects your grandparents' interests, home and favourite memories, so the finished picture sits naturally on their wall.

• Landscapes and seascapes suit someone who enjoys quiet views, gardens or holidays by the coast; browse landscape paint by numbers designs for peaceful scenes with open skies, hills or water.
• Animal designs make a warm choice for a grandparent who loves pets or wildlife, with subjects such as cats, dogs, birds and horses available in different styles.
• Flowers and butterflies give the finished painting a traditional look, especially when your grandparent enjoys gardening, nature or soft colours.
• Christmas and winter scenes bring a seasonal feel to the gift, with snowy villages, decorated trees and cosy festive details to paint before the holiday.
• A personalised photo kit creates a particularly distinctive present from a family portrait, favourite pet or memorable place; a bespoke paint-by-numbers kit turns that image into a guided project.

Small Christmas gift ideas for grandparents

A small paint by numbers gift can feel personal while keeping the budget manageable. An item from our paint by numbers accessories collection makes a useful extra for grandparents who already have a kit, or a simple addition to a present from grandchildren.

Choosing a smaller canvas is another practical option. It takes less space on a table, needs fewer painting sessions and can be easier to finish before Christmas. When looking for smaller-scale Christmas gift ideas for grandparents, choose a familiar subject, such as a garden, pet or favourite view, so the finished picture has a clear place in their home.

A kit can also become a shared present. A grandparent and grandchild can paint a few sections together, with an adult handling the paints and helping younger children follow the numbered areas. For older grandchildren, a kit from our paint by numbers collection for adults can provide a calm activity they return to over several evenings.

Gifts from grandchildren, including toddlers

Paint by numbers kits make thoughtful Christmas gifts for grandparents, and even a toddler can help by choosing a simple picture with large areas and clear shapes. Grandparents can then paint it with the child nearby, giving the toddler a safe role such as choosing the next colour, passing a clean brush or watching the picture come together. It is best to avoid designs with lots of tiny details if you plan to paint together.

Paints and brushes should stay with the adult, as the kits contain acrylic paints. Use a washable surface, protect clothing and keep the canvas flat while painting. For more ideas suited to new painters, see our Paint by Numbers for Kids & Beginners guide.

A personalised kit made from a toddler’s photograph can make the finished picture especially personal. Choose a clear image with good light and a simple background, such as the child smiling or holding a favourite toy. The toddler can also add a handmade drawing or card to the present, while the grandparent paints the photo-based canvas at their own pace. You can easily create your own using our Custom Paint by Numbers option, which turns any customer photo into a ready-to-paint canvas.
